# Playing your own audio files

> Play a file from Discord or a file host, and which file types are supported.

eara can play your own audio files. Instead of attaching the file to the command, you give
`/play` a direct link to it.

## Option 1: upload the file to Discord

1. **Send the file** in any Discord channel.
   - On desktop, click **+** next to the message box and choose **Upload a File**, or drag the
     file into the app. Then send it.
   - On mobile, tap **+** next to the message box, choose **Files**, then select your file and
     send it.
2. **Copy the file's link.**
   - On desktop, right-click the blue file name and choose **Copy Link**.
   - On mobile, press and hold the file name and tap **Copy Media Link**.
3. **Run `/play query:[your link]`.**

> Discord file links expire after about 24 hours. That's how Discord works, and we can't change
> it. When a link expires, copy it again. Many people keep a channel with their favourite files
> and copy a fresh link each time.

## Option 2: use a file host

eara supports [catbox.moe](https://catbox.moe) and
[litterbox](https://litterbox.catbox.moe/), which deletes files after a short time. Upload your
file to either one, then run `/play query:[your link]`.

catbox links don't expire like Discord links, so use catbox for files you play often.

We add file hosts from time to time. If yours doesn't work, ask in our

## Supported file types

Audio formats:

- `AAC`, `ALAC`, `FLAC`, `MP3`, `Opus`, `Vorbis`

Containers:

- `AIFF`, `CAF`, `MP4`, `MKV/WEBM`, `OGG`, `WAV`

## Why can't I attach the file to the command?

Discord deletes files attached to commands after a short time, so the song would stop partway
through the queue. Links are more reliable, so eara uses them instead.
